Conflict Resolution Out Of The Box
Sooner or later, all people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace…..a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation….. the foundation of such a method is love.” Martin Luther King.
Conflict is something we can all encounter within our daily lives and the way in which we deal with different conflicts can determine whether they will escalate or diffuse.
The emotional response to conflict situations can be tempered by developing new ways of resolving problems.
The aim of this box is to teach children peaceful and productive ways of dealing with conflicts thus building skills that strengthen their emotional intelligence.
These skills of active listening, communication, co-operation, negotiating, problem solving, critical thinking, affirmation and verbalising feelings are valuable assets that are important to nurture as children grow in to adults.
Conflict Resolution Out Of the Box is made up of four sections :
1) Introduction to adopting a whole school approach to Conflict Resolution, including a section on using circle time
constructively
2) Practical strategies for children to use in resolving conflicts for themselves, including role play cards with examples of
common dilemmas faced by children.
3) How to set up a peer mediation scheme within a school. A comprehensive training programme for a group or class of
children to help other children to resolve their
own conflicts.
4) Improving the playground environment, including games to encourage participation and inclusion which can be organised
by the peer mediators.
